PETA 2010 kill stats are out

To quote Christie Keith of Pet Connection blog.....PETA took in 1,553 cats and killed 1,507 of them, and 792 dogs and killed 693 of them. There are some disappearing animals, too, gone elsewhere with no explanation of their fates. More in her post Hey, PETA: I don't think 'ethical' means what you think it does. Read it and weep.

The horrifying quake and tsunami in Japan have devastated huge areas of that nation, and left people and animals dead, injured, homeless....what can one person do to help?

There's the Red Cross, which to my mind is always the first organization in to help. There's a dedicated tsunami page here.

For the animals, there's World Vets.

Also for the animals, there's Animal Rescue Kansai.

Just writing this makes me want to cry...I can't imagine wandering lost in the rubble, everything you knew and loved gone forever, whether animal or human. Pound Dogs has a post that touches on this.

Help the Toronto Humane Society

After regular hours, the doctors will get to work on the feral cats in the city as part of the ongoing trap neuter release program.

Sled dog slaughter, and the aftermath

I haven't commented on the slaughter of 100 sled dogs in B.C. Been too sick about it. Along with the massacre of thousands of dogs in Ontario.

But the comments of Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA head of animal cruelty, make me livid.

Christie Keith from the Pet Connection blog has a wonderful two-part article on SFGate.com intelligently refuting Ms. Moriarty's comments. Part one is here and part two is here. Well worth the read.

What really frightens me is how Ms. Moriarty's comments are only one step to the side from those of "breed banners"....the lumping of individuals into a mass and incorrect generalization.

That no dog is taken from its home and killed just because of the way it looks.

That politicians finally realize that their ambitions shouldn't be realized on the backs of dead dogs and the rights of responsible owners.
