BSL is an expression of human need to hate

Quick posting of a half-baked idea that I've had for quite some time....

Too many humans need to hate to survive. It seems bred in the bone, although it may also be a learned reaction.

For centuries, humans have hated and expressed their hatred by killing. Almost always, one side killed the other because the other was different than the haters. Skin colour, religion, nationality, you name it, the difference gave the haters reason to hate and kill.

Now that it's (rightfully) illegal in this country and many others to express hatred by killing the "others", those with the deep-seated need to hate and kill seem to have turned on animals. It was German Shepherds years ago, Dobies, Rotties, now "pit bulls".

Correspondence from pro-BSL people is full of nonsense and emotion, the hatred openly displayed, without a single fact. Political propaganda to promote BSL is the same; it plays on emotion and does not contain a single fact.

Does this mean that anyone who proposes or supports BSL is psychologically damaged? That because they can't kill people to satisfy their warped psyches, their need to hate and destroy, they kill dogs?

Why is hate propaganda against dog owners, an identifiable group, not a crime under Canada's hate law?

Happy Birthday, Sara

People may wonder why I hate breed-specific legislation so much. It's personal as much as intellectual.

This is a picture of my late and much-missed "pit bull", Sara. She qualified as a "pit bull" under Ontario's unjust, unfounded breed-specific legislation. Why? Because I couldn't prove that she wasn't.

Sara was a shelter dog whom I adopted at roughly 8 months of age. No one knows what happened to her before that but I can make an informed guess, because she was a lunatic when I got her. She was untrained, and grabbed and bit because she was frightened of people. My hands were black with bruise from being grabbed, and I have a scar on my upper lip where she made a lunge for my face. After much, much, much work, feeling exhausted and discouraged because I wasn't seeing any improvement, something incredible happened. Sara got a rose thorn in her paw. Without being called, she came to me - limping, it was a huge thorn - to have me "fix it". We took a big step towards each other that day.

Sara improved greatly over the years, showing her intelligence and her sense of humour (yes, some dogs have a sense of humour). She took everything in stride - foster dogs, cats, foster kittens - with patience. Sara would let foster kittens crawl on her, and helped me train foster puppies; she got the biggest grin on her face when she chastised a foster puppy for urinating in the house, she obviously got a kick out of being the "boss dog". She was a wonderful companion. Sara passed away in 2007, and I miss her every day.

Ontario's vague and shoddy BSL has killed approximately 12,000 dogs, adults and puppies alike, solely because of the way they look, not because of their behaviour. If some dog-hating moron had called my dog a "pit bull", I would have become a second-class citizen in Ontario and had no way to defend my Sara.

Breed-specific legislation is wrong. It's downright evil. It makes responsible dog owners into second-class citizens, and kills dogs for political expedience. Any politician who proposes or supports breed-specific legislation is an uninformed or self-interested ass, who cannot be trusted.

Rest in peace, Sara. At least you didn't have to be torn from your home and family to die alone in a shelter, condemned just because of the way you looked.

"Pit bull" rally was a smashing success!

Congratulations to the organizers, I thought there was a great turnout for an event that was word of mouth.

The event was blessed by the weather gods, a threatening raincloud blew over and didn't soak us.

I got my doggie fix hugging and kissing all the "pit bulls" and other dogs that were there, all such sweeties! All the closed minds and uninformed people out there should get "pitty kisses" to understand that it's not the dog, it's the owner.

Justice must be found for Boost and his owners

Yes Biscuit! has the disgusting story of Bost, the Boxer who got loose and was turned in to the local shelter by good Samaritans in Walker County, AL. The shelter director killed him immediately and so the owner's heart was broken when he showed up promptly to redeem his pet.

May that shelter director rot in Hell.

Read it here.
